SEO (Search Engine Optimization) gets your business ranked in Google's list of links; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers to cite and recommend your brand inside the finished answer. They are not competitors. They are layers that reinforce each other.
What each one actually does
- SEO competes for a position among ten links, and the user picks and clicks. The unit of competition is the keyword.
- GEO competes for the citation inside an answer that already arrives complete, naming two or three brands. The unit is the whole question, in natural language.
- SEO is measured by position and traffic; GEO is measured by presence and sentiment inside AI answers.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) sits between them: owning the featured snippet, the People Also Ask box and the reply a voice assistant reads aloud.
Why you cannot pick just one
Because the AI models use search results as the source for deciding who to cite, and around half of Google searches still show the classic list of links. The same clear, useful, trustworthy content that ranks on Google is what AI recommends. Doing SEO without GEO leaves you invisible inside the answer; doing GEO without SEO weakens the very source the AI consults.
What changes in the work itself
Three things. The format that wins shifts toward direct answers, comparison tables, lists and structured FAQ: the shapes a model can lift cleanly. The target shifts from keywords to whole questions phrased the way a person speaks. And entity clarity stops being a nice-to-have: structured data that says who you are, where you are and who vouches for you becomes the precondition for being recommended at all.
Where to start
Measure both fronts at once. 4RED's Visibility X-Ray shows, in a single free diagnosis, where you sit on Google and whether AI already cites your business, so you can attack the bigger gap first instead of splitting effort evenly across two fronts that are not equally broken.
