For a local business, the search that matters most never reaches your website. Someone types "plumber near me" or asks an assistant "who should I hire in Clermont?", and three results decide the outcome. Those three are chosen by your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how consistent your information is across the web, not by how nice your homepage looks.
What actually decides the map pack
- Relevance: your primary category has to match what people search. This one field moves more than most redesigns.
- Distance: proximity to the searcher, which you cannot change, but you can change which service areas you declare.
- Prominence: review count, review recency, your response rate, and mentions of your business elsewhere on the web.
- Completeness: hours, photos, services, attributes and posts. An abandoned profile ranks like an abandoned business.
Why AI made this more valuable, not less
When someone asks an AI assistant for a local recommendation, the model cross-references your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and third-party mentions to pick a shortlist. A business whose data agrees with itself has an immediate advantage over a competitor whose phone number differs between their site and their listing. And unlike national SEO, you are competing against a handful of companies in your area, not the entire country.
The five fixes that move it fastest
- Set the right primary category, then add secondary ones. Be specific over broad.
- Publish one canonical NAP (name, address, phone) and make every channel match it character for character.
- Reply to every review, including the bad ones. Response rate is a visible trust signal to both Google and AI.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site with coordinates, hours and service area, so your site confirms your listing instead of contradicting it.
- Create a real page for each area you serve, with something specific to that market, not the same template with the city name swapped.
How to know where you stand
Test from more than one point in your city, because "near me" results change block by block, and ask the AI assistants the same question a customer would. 4RED's Visibility X-Ray runs that check across AI, Google and the map in one free diagnosis, so you find out whether you are in the shortlist before you spend a dollar trying to get there.
